The corticosterone is also known as 17-deoxycortisol and 11β,21-dihydroxyprogesterone. It is the precursor molecule of mineralocorticoid aldosterone, which is the major homeostatic modulator of sodium and potassium levle in vivo.

However, corticosterone has weak glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid potencies in humans, it is an intermediate in steroidogenic pathway from pregnenolone to aldosterone.
